Research

I use information from DNA sequences for historical inferences. In particular I am interested in the causes, demography and the age of intraspecific differentiation and divergence between closely related species, as well as in studying the extent of gene flow between diverging populations. Because addressing these issues requires genome-wide persepctive I am increasingly using high throughput technologies to generate large amounts of genomic information.

I also study variation of the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) genes in natural populations of amphibians, birds and mammals, with special emphasis on the joint effect of natural selection and demographic events on the patterns of MHC variation within and among populations.
